Two years ago when I was returning from USA, my nieces and nephews gave me a list of things that I should buy for them. I realized that all the things listed were clothing and related fashion accessories’. Now these things you get it in India as well, why stuff my suitcases. I kept telling this to my kiddos and they kept explaining me that how it matters for them to have it from ‘The States’.
The list included clothes and other stuffs like shoes, Perfumes, watches, lingerie etc. from DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Guess, Gap, Lee, Levi’swhich are globally known to XOXO, Wrangler, Aeropostale, Banana Republic, Kenneth Cole, Old Navy, Ralph Lauren to name the few. I was lost. Staying there for a decade now I rarely wore these products. Some brands mentioned in their list were expensive even here. I decided to enlighten myself through them as to why Indians like to shop the USA products.
I started from the youngest member of the list writer:
Mini aged 13 – it’s cool, my friends buy it from there. And they really are different.
I realized that its peer pressure. She at this age must not be knowing the brand unless someone have educated her on it.
Maithili aged 21 – Maasi, these brands are globally known, we get it here too but they are exorbitantly expensive for me. They are fresh, trendy, long lasting. You look smart and different.
I understood that it is attraction towards the international market and products. Indians love to buy from International market and USA is a heaven for all this.
I turned to the oldest in the group.
Madhav aged 26 – he told me in a convincing way. Why shop every six months for a jeans when you can buy one which lasts for years. Why not wear a Ray Ban sun glasses to protect your eyes than a plastic make. Why not use a good pair of shoes which will last longer. He told me that we are aware that one gets good quality stuff locally also, but, apart from the reasons that Mini and Maithili has given you, look it in my way too.
People these days do not mind paying more for brands because you get more in terms of quality. Madhav further added that if we buy from the land of origin (here it means US) it is going to cost less and also get original stuff. The most advantage to shop in the US market is that there is continuous sale season. You name a month and there will be an ongoing sale. Many tourists visiting the USA on vacation enjoy shopping for bargains.
Thanksgiving and Christmas have the most discounts on any given products. And hence it is always cheaper as compared to what you buy in India.
With a roar in his laughter and hinting towards me he said that,“If you have someone who will deliver the same in your hands at no extra cost than it is definitely worth it”.
Putting an end to my conversation with them, I realized that the reasons these youngsters had given, is more than enough for me to stuff my suitcase with their bucket list.

“The needle slides through easily and quickly and the magic happens.” Happy National Quilting Day! To celebrate, here’s avid crafter Kerry, reflecting on her love of all things stitch-related.
Gudi Padwa also known as Padwa is celebrated by people across the state of Maharashtra(India) as the Marathi New Year.
In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (India), it is celebrated as Ugadi while Sindhis celebrate is as Cheti Chand.
The first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar is significant for two reasons — it signifies the start of spring and according to the Brahma Puran, after a massive deluge destructed the world, Lord Brahma recreated it on this day.
That explains why the festival holds a special place among Hindus.
The holy bath
On this day, people young and old begin their day with a holy bath and wear new clothes.
Those who reside in the villages choose to take a dip in a sacred river next to the local temple.
This ritual is meant to cleanse their bodies and souls and prepare them for a new dawn.
Traditionally, Maharashtrian women wear a kashta or a nauvari — a nine-yard saree tucked at the back, while the men are dressed in a kurta pyjama and sport a saffron or red turban.
The traditional rangoli
The women of the house wake up earlier than the men and draw a rangoli in the frontyard.
The rangoli is a colourful pattern made from powdered rice, vermillion and turmeric.
In modern times, people also make use of flowers and candles to make the rangoli more attractive.
The rangoli is meant to ward off negative energies and bring in good luck.
Flower decoration
Diwali or Dusshera, any Indian festival is incomplete without the flowers.
Likewise, on Gudi Padwa too, colourful flowers are offered to Lord Brahma while the entrance of the house is adorned with bright coloured festoons and flowers.
Flowers signify purity and the fragrance is meant to spread positive energy.
The Gudi
On Gudi Padwa, a new kalash made of silver, copper or bronze covered in auspicious red, yellow or saffron cloth is hoisted upside down at the entrance of the house. This is called the Gudi.
The Gudi has to be positioned in such a way that is visible from far and doesn’t miss the eye.
It’s a sign of prosperity and good things to come.
Some people also hoist a saffron flag to commemorate the victories of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
In the evening, a procession is held where people unite and perform the lezim to entertain the audience.
The holy prasad
Unlike most Indian festivals where prasad comprises something sweet, Gudi Padwa is one of the few festivals where people are treated to a unique preparation made from neem and jaggery.
The bitter-sweet flavour is resemblant of the journey of life — mixed with happiness and sorrows.
Gudi padwa is the beginning of Marathi new year.
@Transit address wishes you on this auspicious occasion of Gudi padwa amidst fanfare and religious fervor. May the day bestow on you and your family members.
